Vor dem Haus steht der Kirschbaum in voller Blüte. Ein Junge schaut vom Fenster aus zu, wie Kinder auf Rollbrettern vorbeisausen. Ob er das auch könnte? Lebhaft malt der Junge sich aus, wie es wäre, selbst auf so einem Brett zu stehen. Als ihn die Mutter kurze Zeit später mit einem Rollbrett überrascht, gib es kein Halten mehr. Er übt auf dem Spielplatz, er übt auf dem Pausenhof. Er fällt und steht wieder auf, während die Mutter aus immer größerer Distanz zuschaut.

Dann kommt der Tag, an dem er sich in den Skatepark traut. Allerdings: Es braucht Mut, sich in den Strom der geübten Skater zu begeben, die mit Schuss über die Bahn krachen. Doch es gibt Platz für alle, und so ist der Junge nicht lang allein. Los geht’s! Oder: haw êkwa, wie es in der Sprache der indigenen Cree Kanadas heißt.

Jeden Tag traut er sich etwas mehr, und als der Baum vor dem Haus sein grünes Blattkleid trägt,  ist es die Mutter, die aus dem Fenster schaut. »Wieder da!«, ruft der Junge ihr zu, wenn er von seinen Ausflügen auf dem Brett heranrollt.

Age +6

The cherry tree in front of the house is in full bloom. A boy watches from the window as children whiz by on skateboards. I wonder if he could do that too? The boy vividly imagines what it would be like to stand on a board like that himself. When his mother surprises him with a skateboard a short time later, there’s no stopping him. He practices at the playground, he practices in the schoolyard. He falls and gets back up, while his mother watches from an ever-increasing distance.

Then comes the day when he dares to go to the skate park. However, it takes courage to join the stream of experienced skaters who race down the track at full speed. But there’s room for everyone, and so the boy isn’t alone for long. Here we go! Or: haw êkwa, as they say in the language of Canada’s indigenous Cree people.

Every day he dares a little more, and when the tree in front of the house is dressed in its green foliage,  it is the mother who looks out the window. “Back again!” the boy calls out to her as he rolls up from his outings on the board.
