Seit Tsai Kun-lins Geburt sind fast hundert Jahre vergangen. In langen Gesprächen hat er der Autorin und dem Illustrator von seinem Leben erzählt: von seiner Kindheit, den politischen Ereignissen in der Zeit des Zweiten Weltkriegs, den Jahren in Gefangenschaft, seiner späteren Arbeit als Journalist und Comicverleger sowie seinem Engagement für Demokratie und Menschenrechte.
Weder das 90-jährige Leben noch die komplexen politischen Ereignisse passen in ein einziges Buch – so sind es deren vier geworden. Nachdem wir im Band 1 Kun-lins Familie kennengelernt und ihn durch seine Kindheit und Jugendjahre begleitet haben, erleben wir im zweiten Band, was es heißt, in die Fänge des Unrechtssystems von Chiang Kai-shek zu geraten. Kurz vor seinem zwanzigsten Geburtstag wird Kun-lin zum Verhör abgeführt. Unter Druck legt er ein erzwungenes Geständnis ab. Der Lesezirkel an seiner ehemaligen Schule wird als »illegale Organisation« eingestuft. Er wird zu zehn Jahren Haft verurteilt. Die Haftbedingungen sind unmenschlich, die Zwangsarbeit hart, am meisten aber schmerzt Kun-lin die Trennung von seiner Familie. Wie steht ein Mensch das durch?

The reading group at his former school is classified as an “illegal organization.” He is sentenced to ten years in prison. The prison conditions are inhumane, the forced labor is hard, but what hurts Kun-lin most is the separation from his family. How does a person get through that?"
